Asphalt is bought by the ton and drawn by the square. Every paving takeoff therefore has two halves: measure the area correctly, then convert to tonnage with an assumption you are willing to write down.
Step 1: measure area, with deductions
Trace the paving limits as closed areas in SY. On a typical commercial site that means the drive aisles, parking bays, entrances and any patch areas. Then deduct everything inside the boundary that is not asphalt.

- Concrete pads at dumpsters, loading areas and ADA ramps.

Step 2: read the pavement section detail
The section detail tells you how many lifts, each thickness, and the mix designation. A common commercial light-duty section might be 1.5" surface over 2" intermediate over 6" aggregate base; heavy-duty adds thickness to each layer. Every lift becomes its own line item, because they are placed on separate days at separate unit prices.
Step 3: convert thickness to tons
The practical rule of thumb is about 110 pounds per square yard per inch of compacted asphalt, which corresponds to roughly 145–150 pcf. Mixes vary, so state the figure you used.

So a 4,500 SY lot with 1.5" surface and 2" intermediate is roughly 373 tons surface and 495 tons intermediate, before any waste allowance. Add waste per your own history — thin lifts, small irregular areas and heavy hand work all consume more than the theoretical number.
