Water main takeoff differs from gravity work in one important way: the pipe is the cheap part. Fittings, valves, restraint, hydrant assemblies, testing and disinfection can rival the linear cost, and every one of them is a counted item you either find on the plan or leave out of your bid.

Measure the main by size and material

Trace the alignment along the pipe centerline, splitting wherever size or material changes. Water main usually follows a consistent depth of cover, so depth banding matters less than it does for sanitary — but note where cover increases at crossings, creeks and ditches.

Count the fittings deliberately

Fittings hide in plain sight. Every direction change, branch and size change is a fitting, and most plans label them only with a small callout. Work the alignment end to end and count as you go rather than sweeping the sheet for text.

  • Tees and crosses at branch points, sized by both runs.
  • Reducers at every size transition.
  • Caps, plugs and blow-offs at stub-outs and temporary ends.

Restraint quantity is usually driven by a table in the details that lists restrained length per fitting size and deflection. Take off restrained length per fitting rather than assuming a flat allowance.

Hydrant assemblies are bundles

  1. Hydrant itself, with the correct barrel length for the depth of cover.
  2. Anchoring tee on the main.
  3. Auxiliary gate valve and valve box.
  4. 6" lead from tee to hydrant — measure it, do not assume a length.
  5. Thrust block or restraint, plus stone drainage at the base per the detail.

Services and meters

Domestic and irrigation services are counted per connection and measured per run from the main to the meter or right-of-way. Capture size, corporation stop, curb stop, meter box or vault, and any backflow assembly. On commercial jobs the fire service, its detector check and the vault are often the largest single water items on the job.

Testing, disinfection and the items in the notes
