Calibrate on both axes
On any raster sheet, calibrate using a horizontal reference and then verify using a vertical one. If the two agree, uniform scaling is safe and you can proceed normally. If they differ by more than a percent or two, the scan stretched one direction, and every diagonal measurement on that sheet carries a blended error.
- Calibrate on the longest horizontal known dimension.
- Measure a known vertical dimension and compare.
- If they disagree materially, request a clean export before measuring areas.
- If a clean file is not available, measure axis-aligned work where possible and note the limitation.
Practical technique on low-quality sheets

- Trace along the middle of a thick raster line consistently rather than one edge.
- Take advantage of repetition: measure one typical stall, island or bay, then verify others against it.
- Increase your review pass on scans; small errors accumulate faster than on vector sheets.
Rotation by itself is harmless. A sheet displayed sideways measures exactly the same as one displayed upright, because scale is a property of the geometry rather than of the view orientation.
Ask for the better file
Before investing hours in workarounds, ask. Owners, architects and engineers usually have the vector PDF, and the request costs one email. When the answer is no — common with older as-builts and archived record drawings — document the file quality as an assumption in your proposal. Quantities scaled from a degraded scan are legitimate; quantities scaled from a degraded scan and presented as exact are not.
